Workspaces & Tabs

Organize your projects with workspaces and manage terminals with tabs.

Vertical Tabs organizes terminals around workspaces and tabs. A workspace maps to a project folder on your machine and holds one or more terminal tabs.

A workspace is a folder on your file system shown as a collapsible group in the sidebar. When you open a terminal inside a workspace, it starts in that folder automatically.

Press ⌘ Cmd + O or click the + button at the top of the sidebar. Select a project folder in the picker. It appears as a new workspace in the sidebar.

Click a workspace header to collapse or expand it. Collapsed/expanded state is saved across app restarts.

Hover over the workspace header, click the … menu, and choose Rename. The name becomes editable inline. Type your preferred name and press Enter to confirm (or Escape to cancel).

Drag a workspace header up or down to reorder it in the sidebar. A drag handle appears on hover to the left of the folder icon.

Each tab is an independent terminal session. Tabs can be created inside any workspace.

Press ⌘ Cmd + T to create a new tab in the active workspace. The tab opens with a fresh shell session, starting in the workspace’s folder.

Hover over a workspace header and click the … button to open the workspace menu. Options include:

  • Rename the workspace
  • New Vertical Tab to add a tab to this workspace
  • Sort by creation order / Sort by recent to toggle tab sorting
  • Remove Workspace to delete the workspace and close all its terminals
  • Rename: Double-click the tab name, or open the tab’s … menu and choose Rename. Type a new name and press Enter.

Each tab shows the relative time since the last command ran, like “5m” or “2h”.

Press ⌘ Cmd + W to close the current tab.

Hover over any tab and click the … button to see a menu with:

  • Rename the tab
  • Close the tab
